Why students in India check their work for AI
Colleges and universities across India are adopting AI-writing checks alongside plagiarism checks, and many have issued their own rules on the use of tools like ChatGPT. The challenge for students is that the official tools, such as Turnitin, are licensed to institutions: you usually cannot run the AI check yourself or see the AI report before your teacher does.
A self-check with ProofAI gives you that visibility. It is especially useful if you used grammar checkers, translation apps or paraphrasing tools, which can make writing look more machine-like even when the ideas are your own.
How to check your assignment before you submit
Upload your file
Use the upload box above for PDF, DOCX, DOC or TXT (up to 25 MB). For text, use the AI text detector.
Read the score and highlights
Open the full detector to see which sentences read most like AI.
Revise in your own voice
Rewrite flagged passages with your own examples, reasoning and wording, then check again.
Keep your drafts
Save outlines, notes and version history. They are your best evidence if your work is ever questioned.
Why Indian students sometimes get false positives
Research has found that AI detectors flag writing by non-native English speakers as AI-generated more often (Liang et al. 2023). Many Indian students write in English as a second language and were taught formal, structured styles: fixed introductions, standard phrases and five-paragraph structures. Those patterns can look “predictable” to a detector even when every word is your own.
If you are wrongly flagged, stay calm. Ask which passages were highlighted, show your drafts and notes, and offer to explain your work. Most institutions treat AI scores as a reason to review, not as automatic proof.
Using AI responsibly in college
| Usually fine (check your college’s rules) | Usually not allowed |
|---|---|
| Brainstorming topics and questions | Submitting AI-generated text as your own |
| Grammar and spelling checks | Using paraphrasers to disguise AI or copied text |
| Understanding a difficult concept | Inventing references or quotes |
| Getting feedback on your own draft | Having AI write your project report or thesis chapters |
Rules differ by institution and by course. When in doubt, ask your teacher and disclose any AI use.
AI checks vs plagiarism checks
Plagiarism checks compare your work against existing sources; AI checks look at how the writing was produced. AI-generated text is new, so it usually passes plagiarism checks, which is why many colleges now run both. ProofAI checks for AI only. See our AI essay checker for the full comparison.
Common situations and what to do
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| I wrote it myself but used a grammar tool | Usually fine. Check before submitting; if passages are flagged, simplify the wording in your own style. |
| I translated my Hindi notes into English with an app | Translated text can read as machine-like. Rewrite key paragraphs yourself and keep your original notes. |
| ChatGPT helped me make an outline | Check your college’s rules and disclose it if required. Write the content yourself. |
| It is a group project | Check each member’s sections, and keep shared drafts with version history. |
| My teacher says my work looks AI-written | Stay calm, show drafts and notes, and explain how you wrote it. |
SOPs, essays and applications for study abroad
Statements of purpose, personal essays and scholarship applications are some of the most important documents Indian students write, and some universities and scholarship bodies now check them for AI-generated text. An SOP should sound like you: your reasons, your experiences, your goals. Use AI, if at all, for feedback rather than writing, check your final draft, and rewrite any generic passages with specific details only you could write.
How to make sure your writing reads as your own
Use specific examples
Mention your city, your lab results, a class discussion or your own experience. AI text tends to stay generic.
Show your reasoning
Explain why you agree or disagree, not just what the facts are.
Vary your sentences
Mix short and long sentences the way you naturally speak and write.
Cite real sources
Use sources you actually read, with correct page numbers. Never copy references from an AI tool without checking them.
Write in stages
Outline, draft and revise over a few days. Version history then shows your process.
Read it aloud
If a paragraph does not sound like you, rewrite it until it does.

Turnitin is licensed to institutions, not individuals, and students usually cannot see the AI report. Use a separate checker such as ProofAI to self-check before submission.
Teachers may use AI detectors and their own judgement, such as comparing with your earlier work. Detectors give probabilities, not proof, so your drafts and explanation matter.
