What is an AI text detector?

An AI text detector estimates how likely it is that a piece of writing was produced by a large language model such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Llama rather than written by a person. ProofAI’s AI text detector analyses the text you paste and returns an AI probability, a human probability, an overall verdict and, where available, a sentence-level breakdown that colour-codes passages from likely human to likely AI.

It is built for people who need to review writing they did not produce themselves: teachers marking essays, editors reviewing submissions, recruiters reading cover letters and businesses checking outsourced content.

How to detect AI-generated text

  1. Paste at least 50 words

Copy the text into the box above. Longer passages of continuous prose (a few paragraphs) give the most reliable results.

  2. Click Start Verification

ProofAI analyses the writing and returns a result in seconds. Files? Use the document detector or PDF AI checker instead.

  3. Read the scores

The AI and human probabilities show how closely the writing matches each pattern. The verdict summarises the overall result.

  4. Check the highlighted sentences

Red passages read most like AI output, yellow passages are uncertain and green passages read like human writing. Focus your review on the red and yellow parts.

How AI text detection works

Language models write by repeatedly choosing a likely next word. That makes their output statistically different from most human writing: word choices are more predictable, sentence lengths and structures vary less, and the tone stays unusually even from start to finish. Detectors measure signals like these, often described as perplexity (how predictable the text is) and burstiness (how much it varies), alongside patterns learned from large sets of known human and AI writing.

ProofAI combines these signals into a probability for the whole text and, where the analysis supports it, for each sentence. That is why mixed documents, for example a human draft polished with AI or an AI draft edited by a person, often show both red and green passages.

How to read your result

What you seeWhat it meansWhat to do next
High AI probability, mostly red sentencesThe writing closely matches patterns typical of AI-generated text.Review the flagged passages, compare with the author’s earlier work and ask about their process before deciding anything.
Mixed scores, red and green sentencesParts of the text may be AI-assisted, or the style is uneven.Look at which sections are flagged. Partial AI use (outlines, rewrites) is common and may be allowed by your policy.
High human probability, mostly greenThe writing reads like typical human writing. No further check is usually needed, but no detector can guarantee authorship.
Very short or list-like textThere is too little continuous writing for a stable result.Add more text, or check a longer sample from the same author.

Accuracy, false positives and responsible use

AI detection is probabilistic. Every detector, including ProofAI, can produce false positives (human writing flagged as AI) and false negatives (AI writing that passes as human). Errors are more likely with short texts, formulaic writing such as technical or legal templates, text that has been heavily paraphrased, and writing by non-native English speakers, a group that independent research has found to be flagged more often by AI detectors. If you are checking text in a language other than English, treat results with extra caution.

Use the result as a starting point for a conversation, never as the only evidence for a grade, penalty or hiring decision. Our education guide explains how schools can use AI detection fairly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Paste at least 50 words into the AI text detector at the top of this page and click Start Verification. You get an AI probability, a human probability and, where available, sentence-level highlights within seconds.

ProofAI is designed to detect text produced by widely used large language models, including ChatGPT (GPT models), Gemini, Claude and Llama-based tools. New models change over time, so results should always be read as probabilities. For ChatGPT specifically, see detect ChatGPT text.

Yes. You get 10 free scans per day without signing up, and 25 per day with a free account. Paid plans offer higher daily limits.

At least 50 words. Longer passages of continuous writing give more reliable results than single sentences or bullet lists.

Yes. No detector is 100% accurate. False positives are more likely with short, formulaic or heavily edited text and with writing by non-native English speakers. Use the score as one signal and review the flagged passages before making any decision.

Sometimes. Paraphrasing and "humanizer" tools change the statistical patterns detectors rely on, so heavily rewritten text can be harder to detect. Mixed or uncertain scores are a sign to look more closely.

Your text is used only to run the analysis. Signed-in users keep the score and verdict (not the text) in their history. See our privacy policy.

Yes. Upload PDF, DOCX, DOC or TXT files with the AI document detector or the PDF AI checker.
