What is a deepfake?
A deepfake is an image, video or audio clip in which a person’s face, body or voice has been generated or swapped using AI so that they appear to say or do something they never did. The term now also covers fully AI-generated people and scenes that look like real photographs.
Deepfakes are used in scams (fake video calls from a “boss” or “relative”), fake endorsements by celebrities, political misinformation, non-consensual imagery and identity fraud during online verification. As generation tools improve, the visual mistakes that used to give deepfakes away are disappearing, which is why detection tools matter.
What ProofAI can check today
We are clear about what is live so you can rely on it.
| Media | Status | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Images (JPG, PNG, WebP) | Available | Upload above or use the AI image detector. Results include AI probability and, for some images, signs of editing. |
| Video frames | Available via images | Take screenshots of key frames (faces, mouths, edges of the face) and check them as images. |
| Video files | Coming soon | Full video deepfake analysis is in development. See the video detection page for updates. |
| Text (fake statements, scripts) | Available | Use the AI text detector for AI-written posts, scripts or messages. |
How to check if a video or image is a deepfake
Find the original source
Who posted it first? Official accounts, reputable outlets and the original uploader are your first check. Deepfakes often appear first on anonymous or newly created accounts.
Check key frames
Pause on clear shots of the face. Look at the hairline, ears, teeth, eye reflections and the edge between face and neck, then upload those frames to the AI image detector.
Watch and listen closely
Lip movements that drift from the audio, unnatural blinking, stiff head movement, flickering around the face and a flat or robotic voice are common signs.
Look for other angles
Real events are usually captured by several people. A single clip with no other footage is a warning sign.
Do not share until verified
If you are unsure, do not forward it. For scams, verify by calling the person on a number you already know.
Common signs of deepfake videos
Face boundaries
Blurring, colour mismatch or flickering where the face meets the hair, ears or neck.
Eyes and blinking
Too little or irregular blinking, eyes that do not track naturally, mismatched reflections.
Mouth and teeth
Lip sync that slips, teeth that look blurred or merge together during speech.
Lighting and skin
Lighting on the face that does not match the scene, overly smooth or waxy skin.
Voice
Monotone delivery, odd pauses, wrong accent or background noise that does not fit.
Context
Urgent requests for money or secrecy, sensational claims and no trustworthy source.
Deepfake detection for teams
Newsrooms and fact-checkers use deepfake detection before publishing user-submitted media (see publishing verification). Trust and safety teams check profile pictures and reported content. HR and onboarding teams check identity photos, and businesses train staff to verify unusual video or voice requests before acting on them. Developers can add image checks to their own platforms with the ProofAI API.
Detection results are probabilities, not proof. Use them together with source checks and human review, especially before making public claims that something is fake.
Frequently Asked Questions
Deepfake detection is the process of checking images, videos or audio for signs that a person’s face, body or voice was generated or altered with AI. Tools analyse visual and statistical patterns; people check source, context and consistency.
Full video analysis is coming soon. Today you can check key frames from a video as images with the AI image detector, which returns an AI probability and can flag signs of editing.
Check the original source, look for mismatched lip sync, unnatural blinking and blurred face edges, look for other footage of the same event, and check clear frames with an AI image detector.
Yes. Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP image to get an AI probability. For some images the result also indicates signs of manipulation, such as edited regions.
Yes. Image checks are free for 10 scans per day without an account and 25 per day with a free account.
No. Detection gives a probability and can be wrong, especially with compressed or low-resolution media. Use it with source checks and human review before acting.
Do not send money or information. End the call and contact the person directly on a number you already know. In India you can report cyber fraud at cybercrime.gov.in or by calling 1930.
